Thursday, 2 April – Still in Arizona

We’re trying to slow down and make it a little more ‘leisurely’ journey.  We slept in a little bit, did some planning and took showers.  One problem we’ve had taking long journey’s is that I’m the treasurer of my church and, the bills, payroll, taxes and financial statements still have to be done.  The administrative assistant and I are working on a system and it’s working pretty good so far….  She scans the bills and documents to me and then I create the checks that she can print and have other officer’s sign.  If it works OK, then we can travel a lot MORE!

Church Treasure'in from the road......
Ellen has been looking for days to find a phone booth for her cell phone........

West of Flagstaff, the old Route 66 is pretty much preserved.  The old road took us through Belmont, which is where the “Grand Canyon Train” originates.  There was also gravel road through private property that we took and then an abandoned section that we were able to hike for almost 2 miles.

An abandoned section of old '66

This was a 'spring house' providing water to the forest rangers.  There were no doors in this little building....

We passed through Williams AZ, which claims to be the last town that was by-passed by Rt 66 in 1984 as it was modernized and improved.
A neat old gas station in Ash Fork

Seligman has preserved a lot of the old Burma Shave signs that we grew up with….

Our original intent was to find a campground in Kingman and get off the road well before 4pm and enjoy the afternoon.  We had stopped at the SAFEWAY and stocked up on supplies.  It turned out that the campground we selected on Old 66 was full, as were the other two in Kingman.  We decided to travel on to Topock, which is almost to California.   It was a twisty-turny cliff-side road littered with 10mph hair-pin turns.  Ellen kept her eyes shut most of the time….
As we left Kingman, we hit a 'road closed' and had to detour on I-40 to pick up the old road again...

Sometimes you could see for miles.....

We briefly stopped in Oatman, which defied description.  They have donkey’s running wild in the streets.  They’re tame and curious.
Checking us out...

We did make it to a nice campground overlooking the Colorado River and California just beyond…..

Setting up to grill burgers for supper.....
