It was Ellen’s birthday yesterday when we got the camper
loaded and had Chinese for dinner. In
the morning we hooked up the camper, loaded the bikes, and took Mary’s car to
Sheboygan so she and Henry would have it when they got home from their tour in
the afternoon. We headed up west of
Green Bay to the Navaroni Nature Center.
We got there a little after noon and had lunch in the Camper. We spent almost an hour touring the center
and talking with the volunteer there.
There were several hiking trails and we decided to do all of them around
the flowage area. We missed one turn and
it cost us almost an extra mile so we finished our hike at 7.75 miles. And
didn’t get out of there until 4:15 and we still had a 3 hour run to our
campground north of Eagle River.
We got to the Hi-Pines Campground (another one of our
‘freebies’ for buying the camper) a little after 7PM. Since we missed cocktail hour….. we had to
hurry to get set-up, cook some cheese burgers and open a bottle of the best
Chianti we’ve ever had (a B’day present from Tina). It was a chilly night, near 40 degrees, but
the camper was still warm from the day so we had a comfy sleep.

After the morning ‘wake-up’ call…… we finally got up and headed to the National
Park Ranger Station in Eagle River and talked to them about how to camp and
hike in the National Forests. Thanks to
our “Senior National Park Passes”, it will always be a very good deal (small
recompense for the high 6 figure taxes we’ve paid so far…..), except most of
the campsites are remote and none of them have electric hook ups for Ellen’s
hair dryer or the camper A/C.
We then went to the Eagle River Chamber and got info on the
local bike paths. We picked the lower
end of the Three Eagle Trail and did over 16 miles in an out-and-back run between Eagle River and Three Lakes. It was still a little chilly but Ellen had
a hot chocolate in Three Lakes and it made her day.
When we got back to the camper, we both showered in the
camper since we had ‘full’ hook-up for electric-water-sewer. It was nice to not have to worry about the
tanks getting full. We had leftover
brats for lunch around 2PM and then took a walk around the campground for over
an hour. When we got back to the camper
we decided that we could start cocktail hour a little earlier since we had been
delayed for so long yesterday…………
