18 September 2014 – Thursday
It was supposed to hot today near 90 degrees and we wanted
to hike the Badlands so we didn’t sleep in much. It was easy because of the time change. We
drove to the Castle Rock trail-head for a 6 mile hike. It said that the trail was marked but after
starting out, we never did see any trail markers. It turns out we left the trailhead in the
wrong direction and wandered around for an hour looking for a valid trail. If it hadn’t been for a significant landmark
(and my GPS) we could still be in the Badlands.
Our 6-mile hike turned out to be 7.8 miles, but we made it!
We went back to the campground, took a shower, and used the
back roads again toward Custer State Park.
We got to the park and there were only a few campsites available for the
next three nights. We ended up in the
‘Stockade North’ campground. We did have
electricity so we ran the A/C for 20 minutes before the camper was
habitable. We had cheeseburgers on the
grill, met several new neighbors and hiked around the campground. We’re at 5,200 feet altitude.
